Lilian Ruguru Njogu has had the honor and privilege of serving as a caregiver to her husband, an ostomate, for the past 15 years. This journey has profoundly shaped her passion and commitment to supporting individuals who navigate life with an ostomy.
Through firsthand experience, she has come to deeply understand the unique challenges faced by ostomates. The need for consistent support, encouragement and love is not only vital but transformative in helping them manage their condition and maintain a fulfilling quality of life. It is this understanding that fuels her advocacy efforts to raise awareness and improve the lives of those affected.
She is dedicated to promoting early screening initiatives and enhancing access to essential health facilities. Early detection and timely medical intervention can make a significant difference in saving lives and extending the precious time individuals have with their loved ones. Her goal is to ensure that survivors and ostomates receive comprehensive care that not only addresses their physical health but also supports their emotional and psychological well-being.
In August 2022, her life took a profound and unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer. After months of consultations and medical assessments, she underwent major surgery in December 2022, which resulted in a permanent ostomy. Rather than allowing the diagnosis to define her limits, she chose to transform the experience into a mission of service.
Today, she stands as a proud colorectal cancer champion and a strong ostomate advocate, using her personal story to educate, inspire, and support others who are navigating similar health challenges. She is currently serving as the Program Manager at Stoma World Kenya and the Treasurer of the East Africa Community Ostomy Association.
