Mary Wanjiru Thuo is a colorectal cancer survivor and long-term ostomate of more than 25 years who is dedicated to advancing dignity, awareness, and access to care for ostomates. Her journey began in 2000 when she was diagnosed with Stage II colorectal cancer shortly after completing college. Following life-saving surgery, she received a permanent stoma at a time when awareness, support systems, and access to ostomy supplies in Kenya were extremely limited.
Drawing from her lived experience, Mary has become a passionate advocate for the rights and well-being of ostomates. She is the Co-founder and Vice Chairperson of Stoma World Kenya, where she works to strengthen peer support networks, promote public awareness, and advocate for improved access to essential ostomy care and supplies.
Mary also serves as the Secretary of the East Africa Community Ostomy Association, a regional body dedicated to uniting ostomy communities across East Africa and expanding support, education, and advocacy for ostomates throughout the region.
Through her leadership and advocacy, Mary is committed to ensuring that every ostomate can live a confident, dignified, and empowered life. She continues to work toward a future where ostomates are supported, included, and assured that they are not alone on their journey.
